お盆(由来)

富山県はまだ梅雨が明けず、気温の高さと相まって蒸し暑い日が続いています。
もうすぐ8月。そろそろ気持ちの良い暑さになってほしいところです。
ところで8月といえばお盆ですよね。
社会人の方にとっては貴重な連休ということで、旅行や実家への帰省など楽しみにしている方も多いようです。
ただ、お盆って何？と聞かれても、正直よくわからないのではないでしょうか。
そこで今回は、そもそものお盆の由来についてお話したいと思います。
元々お盆という言葉は、盂蘭盆会(うらぼんえ)という言葉の略称で、これはサンスクリット語のウラバンナを漢字にあてたものだそうで、その由来が盂蘭盆経というお経の中に書かれています。
お釈迦様のお弟子が、その神通力で餓鬼道に堕ちた母親の姿を見つける。
飢えて苦しむ母親を哀れに思い、飲み物や食べ物を差し出すのだが、母親の口に届く前に消えてしまう。
そこでお釈迦様に相談すると、旧暦の7月15日(現在の8月中頃)に安居(あんご)の修行を終えた僧侶にごちそうを振る舞い、供養しなさい、とのこと。
その教えに従ったところ、母親は飢えから救われ、無事往生することができた。
というものです。
この仏教の教えが日本に伝来し、古来より日本に存在した祖先を崇拝する風習が一つとなり、現在でいうお盆の形になったと言われています。
お盆の習慣は各地で様々ではありますが、祖先の霊が帰ってこられ、感謝の気持ちを持って共に過ごす期間であることは共通していると言えるでしょう。
次回はお盆の具体的な中身について少し触れてみたいと思います。
